Composite vs Synthetic

What is a composite?

A composite is defined as a polymer reinforced with fibre.

What is a synthetic?

A polymer or elastomer product with no fibre reinforcement.

Why are composites superior to synthetics/plastics?
UV Degradation

  • Materials such as plastic tend to break down over time when exposed to UV radiation losing their mechanical and visual properties. This means the shingles can discolor, and lose their tensile strength.
  • To combat this Enviroshake has a superior composite blend that utilizes best in class UV blockers and UV inhibitor technology (HALS).The UV blockers block 99% of UV radiation, and the HALS technology inhibits degradation caused by the 1% of radiation that reaches the surface. This means that Enviroshake's best-in-class UV inhibitor technology is designed to help maintain color longevity.
  • All materials expand/contract with temperature change. However, plastic materials can change in size by 12% from winter to summer!Roofing materials need to have a low Glass Transient Temperature so they do not become brittle and fragile in cold temperatures.Polypropylene (plastic) has a Tg of 0 Celsius, making them very fragile and prone to cracking and breaking in the winter.
  • Enviroshake is engineered for thermal stability, using polymers which have a lower coefficient of expansion making it a much more stable roof.In fact, Enviroshake has less than 2% thermal expansion from winter to summer. This is 6-7 times less than plastics!Enviroshake's Glass Transient Temperature is well below freezing.

Wind Uplift

Wind uplift pressure is generated by wind speeds. The faster the wind blows, the higher the uplift pressure.Enviroshake Offers Miami Dade-tested wind resistance of 180 mph (290 km/h), which is the best performance seen by the lab technician.Enviroshake was even unaffected by Category 5 Hurricane Katrina which had wind speeds of 185 MPH.

Authentic cedar Look

Enviroshake provides the most realistic cedar look. All of the Enviroshake®dies are made from the 3D images of real cedar shakes to ensure the wood grains, size and width are true to nature. The cellulosic fibers (natural wood fibers) used in the composition allow the Enviroshake to achieve the authentic look of a cedar shake.Enviroshake is pleased to offer various color options to emulate a natural cedar roof in various stages of its life
